The Bronchial asthma and Allergy Basis of America (AAFA) celebrates a significant win for folks with meals allergic reactions! On October 13, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an AAFA-sponsored regulation requiring allergen disclosure in California eating places.
The Allergen Disclosure for Eating Experiences (ADDE) Act (SB 68) would require California eating places with 20 or extra areas nationally to listing the 9 most typical meals allergens on their menus. These meals are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame.

AAFA helped recruit help from almost 70 state and nationwide organizations, greater than 500 well being care professionals, and greater than a thousand California residents.
“When 9-year-old Addie offered the thought of a menu allergen disclosure invoice to me, I couldn’t imagine that I, an individual who has been hospitalized a number of occasions after unintentionally consuming meals I’m allergic to at eating places, had not thought to writer this invoice already,” Senator Caroline Menjivar (D-San Fernando Valley) who launched the invoice, stated in a press launch. “Now, with the Governor’s signature on SB 68, California is the primary state within the nation to require lifesaving allergen disclosures on menus at meals services with 20 areas and extra!
“I do know the 4 million Californians with meals allergic reactions, and their households, will benefit from the elevated peace of thoughts as they dine collectively at these qualifying eating places. After the invoice goes into impact on July 1, 2026, I hope Addie and I can meet up for a meal to see the end result of our efforts proper there in black and white on the menu!”
In regards to the ADDE Act

- Permits eating places to supply allergen data straight on the menu or in a digital format (reminiscent of a QR code) – if they supply it digitally, they will use an allergen listing or allergen-specific menu
- Requires eating places that use a digital format for the allergen disclosure to additionally supply customers a print possibility
- Gives enforcement by means of the California Division of Public Well being and the native well being companies that regulate meals and restaurant security
What the ADDE Act doesn’t do:
- The regulation doesn’t apply to eating places with fewer than 20 areas
- The regulation doesn’t apply further penalties past the financial high quality allowed for violations of the well being code
- The regulation doesn’t require eating places to supply “might comprise” or “shared facility” data
